Giveaway! Sarah Polley’s “Run Towards The Danger”

Listen to a new episode of the podcast

Welcome to At The End Of the Day. This newsletter is in podcast mode! To listen to conversations with friends and experts I like to learn from, search “At The End Of the Day with Hannah Sung” in your favourite podcast app or here at Apple Podcasts.

I first got to know Sarah Polley years ago, when we would arrive at preschool pick-up with empty strollers (“your chariot awaits”) and newborn babies strapped to our bodies (it’s a look).

I was aware of Sarah’s background, as a child actor and as a filmmaker whose work I greatly admire. However, at school, we were just two people arriving at 3:15 p.m. every day to be snack conveyor belts for our children, refueling them for the big trek home.

Sarah and I began hanging out together during the pandemic, sitting outside in all kinds of weather. She’s funny, kind, sweet and, as it turns out, also capable of eating snacks herself! (I’m joking, but FYI to the parents of extremely young kids, you will get your social lives back one day, I promise).

When you get to know someone in their home vibes, it can be surprising to be reminded of what they are like in their professional element. Oh! My friend, with whom I laugh and eat endless snacks, has a dazzling diamond of a mind and can tell stories that change how you see the world.

That’s how I felt reading Sarah’s book, Run Towards The Danger. In this collection of essays, through clear-eyed, courageous, and meticulous detail, Sarah explores her most difficult personal experiences—you know, the ones our brains try to bury in order to protect us.

It’s an astounding read.

What I wanted to know from Sarah is how we can confront our scariest or difficult personal experiences, why it’s worth doing so and when it should be done. So I invited her to come chat with me on the At The End Of the Day podcast.

Listening to the podcast

I’ve been very excited to see ratings and reviews come in for the show.

If you’re reading, Birds & Jam, PhilJ85 or Kat_Kim, thank you!

I’ve heard some feedback that searching for “At The End Of the Daywith Hannah Sung” doesn’t always work when looking for the podcast. I don’t know what to say about that. I feel like I spend half my life searching for things — my AirPods, that screencap I took last week, peace of mind?

But at least I can do this — create a list of links of the most-used podcast apps, so hopefully this does the trick for now. Just click through!

As for the news that’s getting me down, I just want to say two things:

  • Let people choose what they want to do with their bodies (abortion is healthcare) 1

  • Stop criminalizing poverty2

I’m going to leave you with a link to Disability Without Poverty. Please click through and sign up for their newsletter.

And have yourself a wonderful weekend!

The Period Purse

I am a huge fan of this organization, The Period Purse.

One study from Plan Canada showed that nearly a quarter of Canadians under the age of 25, who have periods, have struggled to afford period care. For me, ending period poverty is about dignity. It’s also a way to chip away at *gesticulates widely* the whole patriarchy while helping individual people in an immediate way.
