What matters most?

Hi! So glad you came by

Welcome to At The End Of the Day!

I write this newsletter for what I call a people-first perspective on the news. What does that mean?

Here’s my take:

  • We are bombarded with news information from every angle

  • News on complex issues can make us feel overwhelmed, negative and powerless

  • The answer isn’t to avoid news — it’s to add perspective

I’m a huge believer in good information and that it can empower us.

So I write this newsletter to reflect on what matters most at the end of the day. For me, that’s a perspective that puts people first — relationships, caring, social fairness and the greater good.

Connecting with you

I started writing this as I woke up to the reality of a global pandemic in March 2020. I’d already been mulling this problem for years, that the more information we get, the more disempowered we can feel. I’ve learned that we need to feel connected if we want to see any good change in the world.

This newsletter has been a lifeline of connection, a total antidote to cynicism. Many of you have written back to me that you feel the same way:

  • “I love the warmth and wit of your writing”

  • “It feels like spending time with a friend”

  • “What I like most is how personal it is while still delivering good journalism”

  • “It feels like it’s always about the thing everyone is talking about”

Thank you for knowing just what to say 🥰 I am sending a high five and finger hearts back at you.

Who am I?

I’m Hannah Sung. I’m a journalist, mom, podcast-maker and letter-writer. I’m a co-founder of Media Girlfriends podcast production company.

Previously, I worked at the Globe and Mail, MuchMusic, TVO, CBC and was the Asper Fellow in Journalism at the University of Western Ontario. I’ve also taught at the School of Journalism and Communication at Carleton University.

This newsletter is a place where I can read, think, ask and process the world. Basically, it’s my dream mom lair but make it email.
